In June 2012, St. Michael was a mess. Having just come out of 5 and a half-year relationship and trying to figure what was next, St. Michael attempted to reach out to an old friend, Oliver the Humanzee, for guidance.
Alas, Oliver had passed away on June 2, 2012. St. Michael and Oliver had been longtime friends and confidants but had grown apart through the years.
St. Michael was devastated by the news that his beloved friend had spun off his mortal coil and was thrown into a deep depression.
Sightings of St. Michael were reported around south St. Louis, mostly in bars and performing the occasional show. St. Michael was lost without his comrade, the wise and kind Oliver the Humanzee.
In the Spring of 2018, as he continued to grieve the loss of Oliver, St. Michael received instrumental songs from his friend, Okendo.
In an attempt to make some sense of this life, St. Michael contacted Mitchell Ure and, using Okendo’s music as beats, the two recorded a tribute to Oliver the Humanzee- the entertainer, celebrity, friend, and love of Raisin’s life.
These songs were soon cast aside for Soundcloud rap meanderings but now the project is being re-released. It is dedicated to Oliver, Raisin, and all who have been exploited simply because they are different.
The “Oliver e.p.” brings up the question Oliver must have pondered throughout his life: Is this art?
